The City Council of the City of Southside convened for a special-called council meeting at the Southside City Hall on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 12 noon to canvass the election results from the August 26, 2025, Municipal General Election. The meeting opened with John Hatley leading in prayer.
On roll call, the following answered present: Mayor Dana Snyder, Council Members: Danny Garnett, Keith Clay, Joseph Hutchins, and John Hatley. With a quorum being present, the meeting was opened for the transaction of business.
The envelope containing the Canvassing Board set of election tapes from the August 26, 2025, municipal general election was opened, and the results were read aloud by Cindy Beshears, Acting City Clerk. The Acting City Clerk opened the envelope from the Etowah County Board of Registrars to obtain the record of provisional ballots cast in the election. The Board of Registrars certifies which ballots should or shouldn’t be counted. The Provisional box of ballots was opened. There were 22 provisional ballots cast at the 8/26/2025 election. The Etowah County Board of Registrars reviewed them and provided their findings to the council. Of the 22 provisional ballots, four were certified to be counted, and eighteen were not. The provisional ballots for the four eligible voters were opened and separated from their envelopes. The acting city clerk called out each provisional vote for all to record. Those votes are reflected in the totals below. A total of all votes cast was recorded and confirmed by all present. The provisional ballot envelopes that were not certified were not opened. They were returned to the provisional box as part of the record of election. The following is a final count of votes cast in the August 26, 2025, election.

The Mayor read the resolution canvassing the election results, with the following candidates being duly elected without a runoff election.
Jennifer McGriff – City Council Place 2
Joseph Hutchins – City Council Place 3
Shane Hamm – City Council Place 4
Danny Garnett – City Council Place 5
The Canvass of Election Resolution number 0-059-2025 reflects that no candidate received a majority of the vote for Mayor, and it was declared that a runoff election will be held on September 23, 2025, between Dana Snyder and Joey Statum.
The Canvass of Election Resolution number 0-059-2025 reflects that no candidate received a majority of the vote for City Council Place # One, and it was declared that a runoff election will be held on September 23, 2025, between Keith Clay and Blake Habyan.
A motion was made by Mayor Snyder to certify the election results and to approve the totals as recorded in the canvass resolution. Danny Garnett made a second. The Roll Call Vote was All Ayes on the approval of the resolution. (Resolution #0-059-2025)
Mayor Snyder and the Council then issued Certificates of Election for the certified council members.
Mayor Snyder made the following announcements:
- The next regular city council meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 9th at 6:00 p.m.
- The next Planning Commission meeting is Monday, September 8th, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
With there being no further business to come before the council, Keith Clay made a motion to adjourn at 12:29 p.m., with a second from Danny Garnett. Meeting adjourned at 12:29 p.m
