CITY OF SOUTHSIDE
COUNTY OF ETOWAH
STATE OF ALABAMA

The City Council of the City of Southside convened for a special-called council meeting at the Southside City Hall on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Prior notice of this meeting was given in compliance with Resolution No. 0-035-2005 of the City of Southside, Alabama, and the Alabama Open Meetings Act. Mayor Joey Statum called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. with Danny Garnett leading in prayer.

The following council members were present: Mayor Joey Statum, Council Members Jennifer McGriff, Joseph Hutchins, Shan Hamm, and Danny Garnett. Keith Clay was not in attendance. With a quorum being present, the meeting was opened for the transaction of business.
The Mayor announced that the Council would enter into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing the purchase of property. The City Attorney certified that the proposed Executive Session was for a valid reason under Alabama law.
A motion was made and seconded to enter into Executive Session. The motion was approved by roll call vote as follows:
Jennifer McGriff – Yes, Joseph Hutchins – Yes, Shane Hamm – Yes, Danny Garnett – Yes, Mayor Statum – Yes
The Council entered Executive Session at 12:02 p.m.
Upon conclusion of the Executive Session, a motion was made and seconded to reconvene the Special Called Meeting at 12:17. The motion carried unanimously, and the Council returned to open session.
Following the discussion held during Executive Session, a motion was made by Joseph Hutchins and seconded by Danny Garnett to approve the purchase of property identified by the following parcel (PIN) numbers:
59724, 59726,59727,59728,59730, and 72931
The approved purchase price was One Million Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ($1,200,000.00) for approximately twenty-six (26) acres, more or less.
The motion to purchase the property was approved by roll call vote as follows:
Jennifer McGriff – Yes, Joseph Hutchins – Yes, Shane Hamm – Yes, Danny Garnett – Yes, Mayor Statham – Yes
The Mayor stated he would execute the contract and forward the documentation accordingly.
Mayor Statum then asked the council individually if they had any comments. They did not.
Southside Resident, Dana Snyder, was recognized and asked the mayor where these properties were located.
Announcements were then made as follows:
• Planning Commission Meeting – Monday, March 9, at 5:30 p.m., Council Chambers.
• Regular City Council Meeting – Tuesday, March 10, at 5:00 p.m.
• Jacksonville State University A Cappella Choir performance in conjunction with Southside High School – Tuesday, March 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church.
• Easter Egg Hunt – March 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the softball complex, including Easter Bunny photographs and activities.
• City Cleanup Day – Friday, March 6, beginning at 8:00 a.m., with sponsorship assistance from Cook’s Pest Control.
There being no further business to come before the Council, a motion was made and seconded to adjourn. The motion carried unanimously, and the meeting was adjourned.
