COMMUNITY STORM SHELTER
The City of Southside Community Storm Shelter is located at 2255 Highway 77 directly behind City Hall. The shelter is intended to provide protection for members of our community and the employees of businesses located within our city limits during major weather events. The shelter is designed to meet all Federal Emergency Management Agency specifications for high wind and severe weather outbreaks. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and operation plans that will be in place when the shelter is open.
SHELTER OPERATION PLANS
Tornado Watch
A tornado watch means that conditions are favourable for the development of a tornado in the area and indicates the possibility of tornado development. The site-coordinator/fire department will monitor the weather through the direct feed link with the Etowah County Emergency Management Service and the National Weather Service.
Tornado Warning
A tornado warning means that a tornado has actually been spotted or is strongly indicated on radar. When a tornado warning is broadcast, the EMA will activate the severe weather warning sirens to alert our community that a warning has been issued and for residents to seek shelter immediately. The site-coordinator will then open the shelter.
SHELTER RULES
No Pets
No Alcohol
No Weapons
No Profanity
No Smoking
Children must be kept under control by parent or guardian
Noise should be kept to minimum so that weather updates can be heard
All music and entertainment devices must be used with headphones
Only one small bag per person
Occupants must remain inside the shelter until an “all clear” is given by the site-coordinator.
